Is Ragging Ethical or Unethical?



Ragging is a bad practice in universities, colleges, hostels and other educational institutes where the senior or an influential person tends to demoralise and defame the juniors through the means of verbal or physical abuse and harassment.

Types of ragging:

There are basically two types of ragging which are as follows:

Physical torture, abuse or mental harassment type ragging:
In this type of ragging, some senior or super seniors gather and ask to do very unnaturally things like abuse to any girl/boy, kneeling, taking off shirt, sexual work, drink wine, smoke cigarette, propose to a teacher or a girl, call to any girl/boy and abuse her/him, beating, slapping, burning, applying lipstick on lips or do some physical labour etc. Most of these things happen in the hostel ragging.

Embarrassment:
In this type of ragging, seniors ask to sing, dance, joke, do any drama, ask to propose to one of their senior girls, ask many unexpected irrelevant questions, situational questions, give training on how to respect teachers and seniors, how to wear dress, shoe, tie etc., how to help each other throughout the course, how to tackle with college or hostel management, how to take care of college or hostel resources, how to raise your voice if anybody will do any wrong against your union or batch mates etc. just like arise of some embarrassing situations. 


Effects of Ragging:

  • The victims of ragging suffer maximum in forms of demotivation, depression, isolation, the demoralisation and many other forms of detrimental effects on the personality.
  • In extreme cases, the victim can even commit suicide due to the mental disturbance that develops over a period of time.
  • If ragging is not terminated at any point, the entire learning atmosphere is much vitiated.
  • There will be a constant fear and disturbance in the mind of every second student that she/he might be the next victim of ragging.
  • The free and the liberal atmosphere in learning tends to vanish in such universities, colleges or institutes.
  • It impacts the confidence level of young students and disturbs their focus from education to other activities that are the reason they face issues while dealing with different academic projects such as dissertation proposal and dissertation writing and so on.  

How to remain to save from Ragging:

  • Always be confident and be relaxed in front of your seniors, in the very first week of class, do not wear new clothes or shoes and do not take new bags or stationary.
  • Try to stay in groups at your university or other institutes premises.
  • Do not wear the student ID cards in your necks, out them in your pockets.
  • Try to groom yourself, if you have a little beard on your face, its look very cool and you looked like a senior instead of fresher because much fresher have trimmed their beard.
