GIFT and BRIBE



Most of the people confuse to understand the difference between gifts and a bribe. But there is a basic difference between them. A bribe is an offer, giving or receiving something of value for the purpose of influencing the actions of a person in the discharge of his or her duty.

When you are working in a company or in any organisation, you have to be very careful about these two things. It is not necessary that just money offered is a bribe. A company buys a certain machine from the other party and an engineer Harry with other staff is dealing with the project. They had done the bidding and prepared final purchase documents. One of the officials invited an engineer along with his family to join them in spending a relaxing holiday at hotel at their expense, he find it ok as they are at the end of purchase and accepted the generosity of the company and went   for a good and luxurious holiday at the hotel with the other party officials. After some days when the supplied machine was tested, they were not working properly. When they reported, the supplier company refused to honour the warranty. Now Engineer Harry and his team discussed the problem with their boss. The boss instructed Harry to deal with the supplier directly regarding technical issues and start legal action against them, now Harry got hesitated and explained the boss about his spent holiday with officers of the supplier. Boss agreed that Harry could not have further dealings with the supplier and assigned the task to another employee. After a week, the president issued a memo stating that Engineer Harry has stepped down from the committee and his assistant would replace him.

What would you do if you were Harry, in the end; he lost his job just because of accepting an offer. It is often impossible to determine the expectation of a giver. So be careful in accepting offerings. Gifts like pads and key chains with printed names are considered as advertisement. Is the gift nominal enough to influence business decisions? Valuable gifts are unethical, don’t accept them.
